GPT Cleanup

Em Dash Remover

Remove the em dashes (—, U+2014) that ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini put in almost every paragraph. Pick what replaces each one: a comma, a hyphen with spaces, a plain hyphen, or nothing. En dashes become hyphens, and the usual hidden characters, non-breaking spaces and smart quotes are cleaned in the same pass. Words and line breaks are not touched. Nothing leaves your browser.

Spaces around the dash are absorbed, so word — word and word—word produce the same result. Comma is the default because it reads correctly in most sentences; switch styles and click Clean again to compare.

Why AI Text Is Full of Em Dashes

Language models learn the statistics of the text they are trained on, and the edited prose that dominates that text (books, journalism, essays, well-written web pages) uses em dashes far more than email or chat does. Preference tuning then rewards answers that read as fluent and polished, and an em dash is the cheapest way to sound polished: it joins two clauses without committing to a comma, a semicolon or a full stop. The result is a dash in nearly every paragraph.

It is a habit, not a signature. There is no hidden marker in an em dash and removing it does not change how AI detectors score the text; they look at word choice and sentence rhythm, not punctuation glyphs. The full story, including how to stop ChatGPT from producing them, is in Why Does ChatGPT Use So Many Em Dashes?

How to Remove Em Dashes in 3 Steps

  1. Paste. Drop the text into the left panel.
  2. Choose a style. Comma, hyphen with spaces, plain hyphen or remove. You can change it and click Clean again.
  3. Clean and copy. Click Clean; the stats bar shows how many dashes were rewritten and what else was cleaned. Click Copy and paste.

Want the Markdown symbols (**, #) gone too? Use the AI Text Cleaner, which strips formatting and turns em dashes into hyphens in one go.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about em dashes in AI-generated text

Why does ChatGPT use so many em dashes?
The edited prose it learned from (books, journalism, essays) uses em dashes far more than everyday writing, and preference tuning rewards text that reads as polished. An em dash also lets the model join two clauses without choosing a comma, semicolon or period. It is a statistical habit, not a watermark.
Which character is "the ChatGPT dash"?
Almost always the em dash, U+2014 (—), typed with no spaces around it. The en dash (U+2013, –) is shorter and used for ranges like 2019–2020; the hyphen (U+002D, -) is the key on your keyboard. This tool rewrites the em dash with the style you choose and turns en dashes into hyphens.
Which replacement should I pick?
Comma for most prose: it reads naturally in nine cases out of ten. Hyphen with spaces when you want to keep the pause. Plain hyphen only for compound words where the model used an em dash by mistake. Remove when the dash is decorative. If the dash sets off a real parenthetical, consider rewriting the sentence instead.
Does removing em dashes make text pass AI detectors?
No. Detectors weigh many stylistic signals, and plenty of human writers use em dashes. Removing them makes the text match your own style; it does not make AI-written text read as human.
Does the tool change anything else?
It runs the standard GPT Cleanup pass at the same time: hidden characters (U+200B, U+FEFF, U+2060 and friends) are removed, non-breaking spaces become regular spaces, smart quotes become straight quotes and the Unicode ellipsis becomes three dots. Words, line breaks and Markdown are left alone. The stats bar lists every change.
How do I stop ChatGPT from using em dashes in the first place?
Add a line to Custom Instructions such as "Do not use em dashes; use commas, periods or parentheses instead." Recent versions of ChatGPT follow this reliably; in long chats, repeat the reminder if the habit creeps back.
Can I do this with Find and Replace instead?
Yes. In Word or Google Docs, search for the em dash character (copy one from the text) and replace it with a comma and a space, then fix double spaces. For code, text.replace(/\s*\u2014\s*/g, ", ") does the same. This page is the same operation without the fiddling, plus the hidden-character cleanup.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser; there is no server, no account and no logging of text. Usage analytics record only counts.
