GPT Cleanup

AI Text Cleaner

A free AI text cleaner for anything copied out of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, Grok or DeepSeek. It removes the Markdown symbols (**, ##, bullets, tables), the hidden Unicode characters (U+200B, U+2060, U+FEFF, U+00A0), the smart quotes and em dashes, and the interface markup, and leaves the words untouched. Paste, click Clean, copy as plain text or as real formatting for Docs and Word. Nothing leaves your browser.

What Comes Along When You Copy AI Text

Every AI chat shows you rendered text but puts something messier on the clipboard: the raw Markdown that produced the bold and the headings, the characters the interface uses to control wrapping while an answer streams in, and in ChatGPT's case the HTML attributes of its message container. None of that is a watermark and none of it is deliberate; it is what rich-text copy does. The mix differs by tool.

SourceTypical artifacts in copied text
ChatGPTMarkdown (**, ##, bullets, tables), non-breaking spaces in lists, zero-width spaces, data-start / data-end HTML attributes
ClaudeMarkdown, smart quotes, em dashes, occasional zero-width joiners and non-breaking spaces
GeminiMarkdown, non-breaking spaces, byte order marks at chunk boundaries, em dashes
Copilot / BingMarkdown, superscript citation markers, non-breaking spaces, direction marks
Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeekMarkdown, citation brackets, smart quotes, em dashes, zero-width characters

Before and After

## Launch checklist

- **Timeline:** finalize by Friday — no exceptions

After cleaning (plain text)

Launch checklist

• Timeline: finalize by Friday - no exceptions
• "Owner": marketing team
• Budget: $12k...

Switch the output to For Docs & Word and the same text copies as a real heading and a real bulleted list, with "Timeline" in bold.

AI Text Cleaner vs. AI Detector vs. AI Humanizer

These three get mixed up. A cleaner removes characters and markup and leaves the writing alone; that is this page. A detector estimates whether text was machine-written; our AI Detector does the technical version of that by scanning for the artifacts listed above. A humanizer rewrites sentences to change the style; we do not make one.

Cleaning does not affect detector scores. Style-based detectors look at word choice and sentence rhythm, not at invisible characters, so text that scored "AI" before cleaning scores the same after. Use the cleaner because you want correct, portable text, not as a disguise.

How to Clean AI Text in 3 Steps

  1. Paste. Copy the answer from the chat and paste it into the left panel. The badge shows how many hidden elements were found.
  2. Clean. Click Clean. Markdown symbols, hidden characters, smart quotes and interface markup are removed; the stats bar lists what changed.
  3. Copy. Choose Plain text for Slack, forms, code and CMS fields, or For Docs & Word to keep headings, bold and lists as real formatting. Click Copy and paste.

Need something narrower? The ChatGPT Space Remover focuses on double spaces, blank lines and invisible characters; the ChatGPT Formatting Remover on Markdown; the Em Dash Remover lets you choose what replaces each dash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cleaning AI-generated text

What does an AI text cleaner do?
It takes text copied out of an AI chat and removes everything that is not the text itself: Markdown symbols such as ** and ##, invisible Unicode characters, non-breaking spaces, interface markup, smart quotes and em dashes. The words are left exactly as written. You get plain text that pastes correctly into Google Docs, Word, email, Slack, a CMS, a spreadsheet or code.
Does it work for Claude, Gemini and Copilot, or only ChatGPT?
All of them. Every AI chat renders Markdown and carries its own mix of hidden characters when you copy, so the cleaner does not care which model wrote the text. It also works on output from Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek, Notion AI and any other assistant.
Is this an AI humanizer? Will the text pass AI detectors?
No. A cleaner removes technical artifacts; it does not rewrite sentences. AI detectors such as GPTZero or Turnitin judge writing style, and cleaning hidden characters does not change that. If you want text that reads as human, you have to edit it yourself.
Why does AI text paste with asterisks and hashes?
Because the chat shows rendered Markdown, but the clipboard carries the raw Markdown source. The ** that made a word bold and the ## that made a heading come along as literal characters. The cleaner removes them, or, in the "For Docs & Word" copy mode, converts them into real bold, headings and lists.
What are the hidden characters and why do they matter?
Zero-width spaces (U+200B), word joiners (U+2060), byte order marks (U+FEFF) and non-breaking spaces (U+00A0) take little or no visual space but are real characters. They break keyword searches, make two identical-looking strings compare as different, throw syntax errors in Python and JSON, and show up as odd symbols in some editors. The HTML (Raw) view shows each one with its code point before you clean.
Can I keep the formatting instead of removing it?
Yes. After cleaning, switch the output to "For Docs & Word" and click Copy. The clipboard then carries real headings, bold text, lists and tables, so Google Docs, Word, Notion and most email clients paste proper formatting instead of Markdown symbols.
Does it change em dashes?
By default em dashes and en dashes become plain hyphens, and the Unicode ellipsis becomes three dots. If you want em dashes replaced with commas or removed altogether, use the dedicated em dash remover, which offers those options.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The cleaner is a few kilobytes of JavaScript that runs in your browser tab. There is no server, no account and no text logging; usage analytics record only counts, never content. It keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
